Spring 2008 Semester Library Hours
Posted by lrath on January 22, 2008
The Spring 2008 semester starts Friday, January 25th. That means the library will be open every day again, and with longer hours. Please note that the service desks (Circulation, Reserve, Reference, Laptop Loan desks) within the library have different hours. Why? So students will have a place to study even though the service desks are closed.

library hours of operation should be 24hours/day ALL SEMESTER

I’m glad you are such an enthusiastic library user. In the CUNY system, Newman Library has the longest daily hours. Also, I believe we are the only CUNY library open 24 hours during both midterms and finals.
Here is why we are not open 24 hours the entire semester:
(1)The only periods when there is a high demand and enough library traffic to justify 24/7 hours is during midterms and finals. It would not be fiscally responsible to open the library 24/7. If the demand and traffic ever increase during regular semester periods, the library will make a request to the college administation to consider funding 24/7 operation all semester.
(2)As you can imagine, there is a cost for this service … electricity, security to keep it safe, heating/cooling, and other expenses. The budget for 24/7 library operation for the entire semester would be quite costly. The budget is better spent on other college resources and services, especially since there isn’t a demand for this service during the entire semester.
Thank you for your comment.
