2nd Annual Census Workshop Series

The New York Census Research Data Center is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Census Workshop Series. This year’s workshops, which will focus on mapping and spatial analysis, will be held at Baruch College as follows:

  • March 25th, Mapping, GIS and Spatial Data: U.S. Census and Beyond
  • April 8th, Hands-on Introduction to ArcGIS
  • May 8th, Spatial Statistics, Spatial Research & Confidential Census Data

Sponsored by the Baruch College School of Public Affairs, Newman Library, and the New York Census Research Data Center (NYCRDC), the workshops are free and open to the public but registration is required. To register, or for further information, send a message to benjamin.orr@baruchmail.cuny.edu

Census data workshops

Baruch College will host three workshops designed to help faculty, graduate students, and other researchers better understand and use Census Bureau data.

All workshops will meet 12:30-2:30 in the Skylight Room, 3rd floor, 17 Lexington Ave. @ 23rd St. Lunch will be available starting at noon. There is no workshop fee, but space is limited.

Tuesday, April 17: What Kinds of Data Does the Census Bureau Collect?
Facilitator: Rosemarie Fogarty, Information Specialist, US Census Bureau
Provides an overview of Census Bureau data, using the Census’s website as the starting point.

Tuesday, May 15: Economic Data and Extracting Information from Data Files
Facilitators: Leonard M. Gaines, Research Specialist, NYSDED; Shulamith Gross, Professor of Statistics, Baruch College; Louise Klusek, Librarian, Baruch College
Covers publicly available microdata on individuals and households, as well as detailed statistics available on for-profit and not-for-profit enterprises; also demonstrates how to access, download, and begin analysis of these data with statistical software.

Tuesday, May 29: Using the NYCRDC and LED and LEHD Data
Facilitators: Warren Brown, Director, Program on Applied Demographics, Cornell University and Research Director, NYCRDC; Rosemary Hyson, Administrator, NYCRDC, US Census Bureau; Lars Vilhuber, Senior Research Associate, CISER, Cornell University; Jeremy Wu, Program Manager, LEHD, US Census Bureau
Overview of non-public Census microdata available through the secure research facilities of the New York Census Research Data Center (NYCRDC) at Baruch College and Cornell University; focus on the Local Employment Dynamics (LED) and Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) programs; also covers how to use the LED for local-level analysis of employees and businesses, and procedures for applying for access to non-public microdata through the NYCRDC.

Workshops cover beginning and advanced database search techniques, searching the web, and resources related to business, accounting, marketing, career & job resources, industry information, annual reports, company information, and sessions on Reuters and Bloomberg. BCTC and Subotnick Center workshops are listed as well.
